5. Traffic

The amount of traffic the number of visitors that come to your site, how long they stay and how many pages they view are all taken into account when your traffic is rated. There are millions of websites on the internet and each and every day more are created and launched. The amount of traffic that all of the websites on the web receive is tracked and charted. The algorithms involve a number of criteria and parameters, all relating to the content of the website, the website’s size, the number of incoming links to the website, and the content’s relevancy. Spearheaded by HollyPe�o, 35, a Chicago native, the group seeks to combine old Hollywood glamour with a modern, sex kitten vamp twist. Reminiscent of the 1950s, Shameless Burlesque combines humor, fetish and striptease as adult entertainment.

Capitalizing on the burlesque revival sweeping the country by performers such as Dita Von Teese and Michelle L'Amour, HollyPe�o prefers to look to the past for inspiration during her performances. "We mix old and new music � old bump and grind jazz along with rock and roll. I'm the Mae West of the group, that's my attitude," she laughs, "We are about the strip teases, not the stripping."
The girls agree that vintage sex appeal is key to their performances, and they deliver on the promise by recreating that era through hair, makeup, music and of course, the performance. "My style is glamour with gowns and full makeup. I go for the classic, burlesque look just like Gypsy Rose Lee," explains Natrix, 28.
At a recent Vagabond nightclub performance, the girls took to the stage as the Brian Setzer Orchestra's "Jump, Jive and Wail" tune blared. Pe�o, La Rue, Lautrec, and Natrix, took their cues by the stage, and dressed as naughty school girls, they shimmied, twirled and stripped down to pasties.

The crowd roared and cheered as Shameless Burlesque gyrated to the music, acting out mini skits of school girl mischief and false modesty. Throughout the act, the crowd shoved toward the stage, trying to get a closer look.

"I just love my girls," excitedly shouted Pe�o when Lautrec finished her Catholic school girl set. "The point here is to give people a fantasy, and to give them something to remember and talk about later," said Pe�o. Burlesque dancer Natrix agrees, "You have to be glamorous, titillating and intelligent; but also bawdy and sexy."
American burlesque, which took form as a knee jerk reaction to the strict Victorian mores of the late 19th century, truly became main stream during the late 40s and 50s through performers such as Gypsy Rose Lee and Lily St. Cyr. These performances emphasized the "tease," and often used Vaudeville-esque humor and elaborate props. Unfortunately, burlesque soon took a back seat in the 60s after the emergence of full strip clubs and Playboy magazine.

Yet, the current revival of burlesque can be attributed in part to the "less is more" flirtatious presentation offered by modern burlesque. As Pe�o states, "Shameless Burlesque offers something different, a night of total escapism."

As their act concludes, it is evident Pe�o loves what she does, "I hunger for the attention. There isn't anything like this anywhere." The crowd quickly gathers around and with a wink she says,"Hang on a second, I need to fix my beaver cleavage."

Using File Permissions To Combat iFrame Injections

After posting my article on "Measures to Prevent and Detect iFrame Injection Attacks", I started to notice that many other people on the internet were linking to my article. They obviously felt that it was indeed an important weapon against combatting iframe injections. You can find this article at:

As my article grew in popularity, I started to notice that iframe injection attacks against my website started to increase. I guess I was making some people very unhappy. As my website is constantly being monitored, I was able to react and remove these iframe injections almost immediately.

It soon occured to me that perhaps the file permissions on my web pages needed to be beefed up, made more restrictive.

As per my post on "Website Protection and Security Using File and Directory CHMOD", most website file permissions are:

Files: 644
Folders: 755 (with index page in it)
Images: 644
CGI scripts: 755
Php scripts: 644

Since iframe injections attack your index.* web pages, the CHMOD 644 may not be enough to protect them. CHMOD 644 gives you, the user, all read, write and execute permissions and everybody else only read and execute permissions. You would think that this should be enough to prevent an iframe injection. Unfortunately, it is not.

In my article on "Website Protection Against iFrame Injections", hackers may be attacking your website via a virus that they may have downloaded to your computer without you realizing it. Even though you change passwords, and remove the iframes, you may still be vulnerable to iframe injections. This virus could be sneaky enough such that the website logs will show that FTP traffic originated from a valid source, with valid FTP credentials. The result will be the same as a user logging into the website and thus will be able to write (modify) to the web page, adding the iframe injection. What we need to do then is to prevent writing to the web page. We need to change the web page file permission or CHMOD value.

The CHMOD capability depends on two conditions:

1) The server you are connected to must support the CHMOD command.
2) You must have access rights to change the attributes of that remote file or directory.

Make sure these two conditions are fulfilled.

It is also important to remember that you can set any non-script file to anything you like. You do not however want to set a directory or script to anything but CHMOD 755 if you want it to be able to run (for obvious security reasons). Only the owner of a file or root may change the permissions on a file no matter what its current permissions maybe.

Since the iframe injection attacks are against the index.* web pages, we need to prevent modifications of these web pages. Now suppose you have just finished modifying your index.html and you did not want anybody to update or to delete it. Then, give the web page file permission CHMOD 444 and it will have this effect. This gives everybody, including the owner (user), only read capability. If the owner turns off the write permission, the file is protected from accidental destruction. This is a pretty secure way to store HTML files when they are not being currently edited.

If you set file permission CHMOD 444 via FTP, then you may find that your host does not allow CHMOD 444 to be set via FTP - and even though you think you've changed to 444, it reverts back to 644. You may have to set CHMOD 444 via your host CPanel in a browser. Make sure you check this out. If you entered your site via FTP, edit your index.html file by adding a small change and then removing it. When you try to save the file, you should not be allowed to over-write it.

Once you have changed file persmission to CHMOD 444 on your web page, ensure that it still functions and runs properly.

Whenever you need to edit your index.html page, simply change back to CHMOD 644, do your changes, and then change again to CHMOD 444.

Having to change file permissions everytime you need to edit a web page might feel a bit tedious. Preventing iframe injections to your website which could classify you as a risk site by Google, and hence, stop all traffic to your website, is well worth the extra few minutes needed to edit a web page via the CHMOD command.

3. Use a template: This is the trickiest option. Some of the time this is easy, cheap and simple. Most of the time this is a trap disguised as all those things. Really use your head when you look at where your getting your templates. Also, this provides little options for customization.
4. Set up a blog with wordpress and use a theme: This works very well because there are lots of free themes by good designers. The only problem with this is that it has a bit of a learning curve if you've never done it before. As with templates, the themes offer little movement creativity. This is most likely the most well rounded option.

To design a web page you must begin by making sure that you are absolutely clear, in your own mind, what the function of that page is. Is it to sell something, is it get people to sign up to your membership site, newsletter or free report or mini course?

Once the function of the page has been established then please make careful note of the following 'must do' web page design basics.

1. You begin by establishing what keyword phrase is the focus of your page. Let's assume it's 'how to grow roses'

2. The page name should be www.yourwebsitename.com/how-to-grow-roses.html. The title of your page should be, or should at the very least include, 'how to grow roses'.

3. The phrase 'how to grow roses' should appear in the first paragraph and once or twice in every 100 words of your page text.

4. Avoid using lots of different fonts. I use a maximum of two and rarely anything other than Arial, Tahoma and Verdana. Don't use anything fancy, gimmicky or difficult to read fonts - obvious? - you would be amazed.

5. Keep paragraphs short - no more than two sentences.

6. Remember to solve the readers problem, it's all about what's in it for them, what benefit will they gain from using your product or service. They are not particularly interested in you, your company or how wonderful you think your product is. Forget 'me' and 'I', concentrate on 'you' and 'yours'

7. Avoid jokes and too much humour. The odd light hearted remark is OK but you do not know the person you are 'talking' too therefore you know nothing about their sense of humour or what offends them.

8. Always design a webpage in 'American' English.

9. Make sure that your headline is an 'H1' tag. This tells the search engines what the page is all about.

10. To design a web page with long copy is fine if you are going for the immediate sale. If you are just after their name and email address keep it fairly short and to the point.

11. Use a numbered list, check marks or bullet points to get across your main points, they are very effective.

12. Good quality graphics and pictures are essential. A good source of good quality, inexpensive pictures is iStockphoto.

13. Use question marks, exclamation marks, highlighting, bolding, italics and underlining but don't over do it.

14. Search engines can't 'read' graphics or pictures, in other words if your keyword phrase is part of some specially created image it will not register with the search engines.

15. If you have an 'opt-in' box on your page try to have it 'above the fold' and please don't have the button marked 'submit' - sounds awful - 'Yes-Sign Me Up', 'Send Me My Gift' or even 'Click Here' is better.

The first part of this question is easy to answer, yes you can make a good quality website for free, well almost. There is one very small expense involved and that is buying a domain name. Your website address should cost you around $10 and that will cover you for one years use. I know what it's like to be seriously short of funds but even at my lowest point I could scrape together ten bucks!

Next you need a HTML editor, which is a very convoluted title for a website builder. You will have no problem finding them, just put 'free HTML editor' into the search engines and up will pop a fairly lengthy list - but which, if any, are any good ? In my opinion the best of the bunch is Kompozer, downloading it is a simple process and there are no hidden catches.

So now you have the basic tool to generate web pages and to build your site, so what's next?

If there is one phrase that strikes fear into the heart of any wannabe online superstar it's the dreaded 'ftp' or file transfer protocol. This is a piece of software that takes your newly created site and transfers to your 'hosting' company which, in turn, puts it onto the world wide web, a process that many find truly scary as well as technically challenging. It need not be this way, but I will get to that later.

Unfortunately it takes more than that to drive search engine traffic to your site, and even more unfortunately most developers don't program with SEO in mind, nor do they educate the client about the process involved in gaining traffic from search engines.

Whether it's carelessness or a lack of knowledge, or a combination of the two, this often leads to a client that several months down the road doesn't understand why their site doesn't get any traffic and isn't helping their business. A good designer will not only program with SEO in mind, but will also educate the client about the basic principles of SEO, whether they are the one who executes it or not.

Many times the clients I inherit have gone through this scenario and then face drastic on-site changes to get their site search engine friendly before we are even able to begin the arduous process of link building. Whether you are designing a site for yourself or for a client, following the simple steps below when programming will ultimately save the business time and monëy and result in a search engine friendly site that truly maximizes the online potential of the business.

Use Proper Tags for Headings, Bold Text, Italic Text, and Lists

HTML has heading tags, bold tags, italic tags, and ordered and unordered lists for a reason and you should use them. Using CSS you can practically style them however you like, but actually using a heading tag for your headings, and bold tags for important text, will help allow search engines understand what text on a page is a heading or what is more important than the surrounding text. Simply applying a CSS style that makes text largër or bold doesn't do that.

Optimize Your Images

Search engine spiders can't read text within an image. Adding ALT text to your image tag helps, but ideally you should remove all wording from the image and style it using CSS, adding the remaining portion of the image as a background image to the text. Here is a side-by-side comparison of two images that look the same in your browser, but much different to a search engine spider.

Avoid Canonical Problems

Believe it or not, search engines can see http://yoursite.com, http://www.yoursite.com, and http://www.yoursite.com/index.html as three different pages. A simple solution is to use a 301 redirect to point all of your pages to their "www" counterpart. You can also select the preferred domain that Google shows in the new Google Webmaster Tools console.

Get Rid of Session IDs if You have a PHP Site

Have you ever seen a PHPSESSID variable added to the end of a URL on a PHP page (it looks something like PHPSESSID=34908908)? This happens because PHP will add a unique PHPSESSID to URLs within your site if cookies aren't available. This can be extremely problematic for your site's search engine ranking. Google and Yahoo will see a unique PHPSESSID in the URL every time they visit a page on your site, and in turn think that said page is a different page each time. At worst, this could be viewed as duplicate content and get your site banned, and at best it will reduce the perceived value of each page. One solution that I've used successfully is to utilize url_rewriter.tags.

Put CSS and JavaScript in External Files

Nearly every site nowadays uses CSS and JavaScript for something. While both are great for enhancing user experience, neither will help your search engine ranking if left on your page. One of the factors that search engines consider when ranking your site is the percentage of code relevant to the search term. CSS and JavaScript can take up hundreds of lines of code, minimizing the importance of your text and in turn hurting your ranking. By putting them in separate files and simply including them in your page by reference, you can reduce hundreds of lines down to one and increase the amount of code in the file that is relevant content.

Minimize the Use of Tables in Layouts

The debate about whether or not tables should be used in site design has been going on for years and there's no end in site. I fall somewhere in the middle – there are certain circumstances (like organizing tabular data) where I think tables still make the most sense, but I also appreciate the SEO benefits of using CSS layouts. CSS layouts drastically reduce the amount of code in your site that isn't content that the user sees. Just like moving CSS and JavaScript to an external file, the less on-page code that isn't content, the better. Chëck out search engine friendly layouts for some frëe example layouts.
